Juan Figueroa, Ulster County Sheriff

This week in La Voz en Breve, journalist Mariel Fiori has a show on politics. She spent much of today’s program in an interview with the Ulster County Sheriff, Puerto Rican Juan Figueroa. From the criminal justice reform plan to legalizing recreational marijuana, many changes are coming for his office and we wanted to know what the Sheriff thinks and how they are preparing. Figueroa does not agree with a supervisory committee, they already have enough supervision at various levels. In the county jail there are about 200 inmates, 33% of whom represent non-white people, all the inmates are lower class and there are currently 3 cases of COVID-19 among the prison population. The prisoners have not yet been vaccinated, they were going to receive the J & J vaccine but today it was canceled. Regarding the legalization of marijuana, he also said that they need more help from the state to be able to buy drug sniffing dogs, which cost $10,000 each, since recreational use of marijuana is already legal, but it is not legal to drive while smoking cannabis. In her Dignity for All column, Emma Kreyche of the Center for Workers’ Justice discussed the fund for excluded workers, approved last week, and how to access those funds.
